The feel of fall is in the air- days grow shorter, temperatures cool, the chance of rain is a possibility again. These conditions make fall the best time of year to plant hardy trees, shrubs, conifers, perennials, grasses and bulbs. Warm soils allow rapid root growth while cooler air temperatures put less stress on the top of the plant.
The change in season is also a good time to reflect:
Do you have a shady respite from summer’s heat? Perhaps a shade tree with stunning fall color could add pizazz, cooling shade and a sense of shelter in your yard. Red Maples, Ginkgos, Raywood Ash, Birch and Sweet Gums are moderate sized (to 40’) shade trees while Redbuds, Dogwoods, Japanese Maples, Crabapples and several others scale down the size for smaller spaces.
Is your garden entering another beautiful season? Many late blooming perennials like Anemones, Agastaches, Monkshood, Hardy Fuchsias, Asters and ornamental grasses are coming into full glory now. Colorful berries look like jewels on Beauty berry, shrub Hypericums, Cotoneasters, Viburnums and Hollies.
When your annuals and perennials die down, do your gardens look barren in winter? There are many fascinating dwarf conifers in many colors, forms and textures that give your garden structure in all seasons.
Are your pots still stunning or do they need refreshing for fall? Try some Heucheras, Violas, Euphorbias, Asters, Mums, Diascias, Carex, Ferns or Dracaenas for a new fresh look.
Is your vegetable garden entering another bountiful season? As summer crops of vegies fade you can still add lettuce, spinach, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, peas and garlic. If you just want to put sections to bed for winter, planting cover crops on those areas will greatly improve your soil for next year.
